ALICE OF VINCENNES brings to life a little-known chapter of the American Revolution fought on the western frontier, where British soldiers, French settlers, American rebels, and Native peoples converge in a struggle for the country beyond the Appalachians.
While George Washington leads the Revolution raging in the East, the remote Creole village of Vincennes remains largely untouched by the war, its people more concerned with hunting, farming, and survival on the frontier.
At its heart is Alice — a spirited young woman of the wilderness who emerges as a courageous patriot, sewing a flag for George Rogers Clark’s frontier army and refusing to surrender it when the British seize her tiny village.
Her story unfolds amid an extraordinary clash between British Lieutenant Governor Henry Hamilton — the notorious “Hair-Buyer” — and the legendary “Big Knife,” Colonel George Rogers Clark, whose audacious winter campaign would help determine the fate of the American West.
